About the service
Hours of operation: 24/7
The Clinical Assessment Service (CAS) involves patients receiving a clinical triage/telephone post nonclinical call handling/algorithmic outcome via NHS111/ 111 online or 999. Dispositions include:
1. Low acuity ambulance (cat 3 and 4)
2. Advised to attend ED outcomes/ETC outcomes
3. Same day Urgent face to face outcomes
4. Some same day primary care dispositions.
These cases are digitally transferred to a clinical assessor in the alliance (Mastercall, Bardoc, gtd Healthcare and Salford Primary Care Together) for an enhanced clinical assessment.
The GM CAS currently delivers c82.5% of all NWAS 999 hear and treat outcomes in GM. This contributes 41% to the NW regional hear and treat position.
Hospital Admission Avoidance
Through the remote triaging of patients we are helping to reduce the number of patients attending Emergency Departments.
The majority of cases from 999, 111 & 111 online are closed without the need for Emergency Department attendance.
In addition to directly referred activity, the GM CAS, as part of the agreed GM Transfer of Care Principles, provides a safety net to patients who have failed to attend at ED after being referred there. This function is undertaken centrally on behalf of all GM EDs.

CAS Patient
Nothing could have been done better, the nurse I spoke to was amazing and I attended an emergency appt. a couple of hours later.
CAS Patient
Nothing I can recommend to improve. The service we received of both 111 and our local out of hours was amazing.
CAS Patient
Couldn’t fault it. Was very swift, saved taking up a face to face appointment or clogging up walk in centre - needed treatment but certainly didn’t need a&e or walk in centre. Spot on!
